Hamlet, directed by John Gielgud and interpreted by Richard Burton, is staged on Broadway, from April 9 to August 8, 1964, at the Lunt-Fontanne theatre.
The New York Shakespeare Festival produced another Hamlet with Alfred Ryder and Julie Harris and Othello with James Earl Jones.
Celebration productions throughout the United States include, among many others, Henry V directed by Tyrone Guthrie at Minneapolis, King Lear directed by Stuart Vaughan, The Comedy of Errors, Julius Caesar and The Tempest staged by the Dallas Theater Center.
The anniversary was celebrated in Moscow with eight productions: two different versions of Hamlet and then Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Antony and Cleopatra and Romeo and Juliet. But the most interesting event in the celebrations of the Soviet Union was the realization and projection of the film Gamlet by Grigori Kozintsev.
A special double issue of Sipario, devoted to “Shakespeare in Italia” is published. The issue contains articles by Agostino Lombardo, Gabriele Baldini, Salvatore Quasimodo, Mario Praz, Gerardo Guerrieri, and many other critics, translators, film critics, along with reports from London, Paris, Broadway, Moscow, etc.; and is complemented by a list of Shakespeare productions in Italy from 1948 to 1964.

On 21 December 1964, a group of students of the University of Messina produced a “recital” as homage to Shakespeare, in the form of a patchwork of fragments from Shakespeare’s plays connected by sonnets.
A much discussed production of Henry V, directed by Peter Zadek, is presented with the title Henry the Hero at the Theater der Freien Hansestadt in Bremen. Zadek declared that he meant to read the text in light of the myth of the warrior hero, by evoking more recent German experiences. The programme was illustrated by portraits of military leaders from Julius Caesar to Gengis Kahn but also by photographs of Goering, Himmler and Hitler.
Tutto è bene quel che finisce bene (All’s Well that Ends Well), a national première, directed by Beppe Menegatti, is staged by the Teatro Stabile di Firenze. In a review, Paolo Emilio Poesio complains about the “hypertrophic mimicry” and certain embarrassing “tuscanizations” like Parolles quoting Petrarch or the King reading Boccaccio’s life from an encyclopaedia.
