London

“ ‘We do not like the idea of a monument at all,’ wrote The Times on the 20th of January 1864. ‘Shakespeare,’ wrote Punch on the 6th of February following, ‘needs no statue’ ”, Sidney Lee recalls in “The Commemoration of Shakespeare in London”, 1905.

Plans for the 1916 tercentenary in Britain were underway by 1912, if not earlier, with designs to build a national theatre. A short interlude written by George Bernard Shaw to help raise funds for the Shakespeare Memorial National Theatre, The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, was first performed at the Haymarket Theatre on November 24, 1910. It toured the provinces and was eventually broadcast but, according to Shaw himself, brought more applause than subscriptions. When Shakespeare asks the Queen for a boon to endow a national theatre, she replies it would offend the Puritans, and prophesies the most barbarous countries will have their publically funded playhouses before England.

Weimar

Weimar

23 April, foundation of the Deutsche Shakespeare Gesellschaft.

The Grand Duchess Sophia of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, who will become the first patroness of the Shakespeare Gesellschaft, convinces Franz Dingelstedt, the director of the Court Theatre, to produce the English Histories for the Weimar jubilee. The whole cycle of eight plays, entitled Königsdramen, are shown in chronological order before an audience of theatre directors, dramatists, literary critics and scholars as well as industrialists.

In the context of the current war with Denmark, the dramatist Karl Gutskow composed a lengthy ode, Eine Shakspearefeier an der Ilm, denouncing the fratricidal wars of Odin’s sons and comparing Shakespeare to “a mother who whith raised hands sees her children tear each other apart.”

Gifts from the “Free German Hochstift” to the Corporation of Stratford, and a Jarhbuch der Deutschen Shakespeare-Gesellschaft, dedicated to Grand-Duchess Sophia, Berlin, 1865, listing performances of Shakespeare’s plays in 1864:

Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon

Of course the homage to Shakespeare should be universal, yet it does not mean “that each city and each town should on this occasion have a festival of its own”, The Official programme of the Tercentenary Festival of the birth of Shakespeare to be held at Stratford-upon-Avon declares: faraway places like the colonies or America are entitled to their own celebrations, but at home, “there should not be a thousand petty, but one magnificent altar”, in the town of his birth and death, “hallowed by his birth – hallowed by his sepulture”.

The festivities in Stratford are to begin on Saturday 23 April at noon and end with a public ball on Tuesday 2 May, but by general request two more evenings are added, with performances of a tragedy and a comedy “by first-class Artistes of Metropolitan and Provincial celebrity”. The programme includes a banquet, presided over by the Earl of Carlisle, and fireworks, visits of the sites, Shakespeare sermons in church, plus a few performances of Shakespeare’s plays, beginning only on the fourth day of entertainments.

The people of Stratford, who had to pay if they wanted to watch their betters toast Shakespeare, were reminded by angry pamphlets that he was “the Poet of the People”, and encouraged to form a rival committee and organize their own celebrations.

One of the main organizers was the Stratford brewer Edward Fordham Flower, who was also the town’s mayor. His eldest son, Charles Edward Flower gave land for the site of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre and most of the money to build & equip it. It opened in 1879 and ever since the family has filled the chair of the Board of Theatre Governors. Its present occupant, Sir Fordham Flower, is also chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Prague

Smetana composes a Solemn March for the Shakespearean Festival in C major, op. 20, for a pageant of 200 characters from the plays. On 23 April 1864, he conducts Berlioz’ choral symphony Roméo et Juliette at a concert in Prague celebrating the tercentenary and added to the programme his own March.

Paris

20 January 1864, Victor Hugo declined the invitation of Hepworth Dixon, editor of the Athenaeum, to join the London Shakespeare Committee, because they had taken too long in asking his son François-Victor to join. Six letters exchanged with Louis Blanc relate his involvement in the Tercentenary celebrations.

On 11 April, Hugo’s friends decide the foundation of a “Comité Shakespeare” with George Sand, Auguste Barbier, Alexandre Dumas, Berlioz, François-Victor Hugo, Michelet, Théophile Gautier, Littré, Paul Meurice, Leconte de Lisle, Laurent Picha, Michelet, Paul de Saint-Victor, and want Hugo to preside a banquet on the day of the anniversary. This causes violent reactions in the newspapers, including a furious letter from Baudelaire in Le Figaro, who accuses the Hugo clan of making all this noise to promote François-Victor’s translation of the complete works, and trying to turn Shakespeare into a socialist. The banquet is cancelled, causing George Sand to denounce Bonaparte’s government as backward in Revue des deux mondes. Hugo’s preface to the translations grows into a full independent volume, William Shakespeare, and is published that year (read extract).
