Smetana composes a Solemn March for the Shakespearean Festival in C major, op. 20, for a pageant of 200 characters from the plays. On 23 April 1864, he conducts Berlioz’ choral symphony Roméo et Juliette at a concert in Prague celebrating the tercentenary and added to the programme his own March.
